WORKSHOP ANIMATRONICS
Welcome to my channel where we explore the many ways the DIY (Do It Yourself) builder can design and construct their own Animatronic characters.
These will range from simple motorized Halloween props for your home haunt to more complex characters and robots suitable for many other purposes.
Videos will include how to demonstrations on mechanical mechanisms that may use servos, motors, linear actuators or pneumatic components. In addition we will look at a variety of controllers such as the Picaxe and Propeller that we use to bring our characters to life.
If you would like more detailed explanations on these topics you can check out my articles in Servo Magazine - servomagazine.com/ for my DIY Animatronics series.
Please join me as we learn to build better and more lifelike characters!

Thank you so much for sharing. I am working to improve upon my animatronic designs. Any and all links are appreciated. Thank you for the links provided. Have a great rest of your day.
Sadly I can't find it anywhere!!! Aughhh I need it so bad :( I might be too late
Very nice, do you have the plans and parts list for this?
Please help me with this project, I save this guy from the garbage. I’m trying to use him for vinyl presentation night. It’s a huge theme. I’m working on. It’ll be wonderful to salvage it and turn it into animatronic.
What about a like an axworthy pully system where is constantly circling?
Hello, is it available in europe? or pdf form?
Incredible tutorial. I learned alot for my first build coming up this season
How long is this available?
Just the video I needed, tysm! I'm making a kinetic sculpture and need to figure out a scissor like open and close movement.
Hi. Where did you say you got your eel head? I couldn't quite make it out.
Do you sell any of these?
Had a suggestion (I'm a retired Fabric worker Air Force) use some spray glue on some card board and lay the templets down on the glued side, dry, and cut out… makes a stiffer templet. Use card board about as thick as a pizza box or even a pizza box if you like.
I think its a magnete Just a theory
pop up mechinizum? I can't find it.
can you do a diy video on how to animate a mannequin's arm to go up and down instead of circling
Hi having trouble with the one with the head moving up and down the pipes are tying up
Great ideas! Thanks!
Do you have the links for everything? Speaker, controller? Please
Do you know how I can Make mine sound louder than they are I bought them from home depot but want them louder
Great video I am looking for a way to build a mechanical ball that moves from side to side. I am building a skeleton pickleball court in my driveway and am trying to figure out how to have a lighted ball the appears to be moving form one side of the court to the other. Any ideas?
Great video, thanks.
super helpful! thank you!
Where do you get the Vent motors wires that you have shown coming out of the vent motor (that you are pluging into the wall wart)? what are they called and do those wires come with the purchase of a vent motor? I want to buy the blower motor but the ones that pop up do not have wires sticking out that we can wire up to a wall wart. anyone know this answer? Also in your 2nd demonstration (has green guy with the hat), how did you attach the "Bracket" to the vent motor? does a screw just fit right into the vent motor thing that spins?
He won't be responding. He passed away 😕
Bro get to the point too much talkin
He explained everything needed, if you weren't paying attention you wouldn't know where to start.
How much Volt was the First One?
I'm working on a design for my 30 x 40 basement dark ride. The first few sections will be "some" of the following, mine, underground cavern, jungle, saguaro national forest, a scene with hills covered in wind turbines and then they begin to overload and explode. The last sections will be a Holy house rather than a haunted house, including Paul on the road to Damascus, Jesus healing the crippled man, Jesus walking on water, Jesus ascending into heaven and a cathedral with a pastor giving a sermon. Then on the way out a priest prop, will come out through a door and give his thanks for coming and blessings for the week.
Very nice, you must have added some weight to tip the rocker! Very smooth and natural motion!
How can I get a book in the UK. Thanks
I’d be interested in purchasing one of these. Do you still have them available?
This upload is a timeless classic. It has helped thousands of people from new beginners to experienced prop builders and I for one keep coming back to watch this recording several times a year, every year. Sometimes I come here for inspiration or to get my haunt mojo back and I often come here to pay homage to a great man who helped me so much. He spent a lot of time and effort to help me to make things that I deemed to be out of my skill or knowledgeable zone. I appreciated all Steve did for me and I miss the guy. Thank you for everything you have done for all of us and the whole halloween loving community. Best wishes 👍
I need something the swings in circles like a bat flying around on my roof. Any ideas…
Awesome stuff. You still working? I'm going work on a few for my haunt this year! DruryLand 2023!! Thanks for your info! really helpful!!
While I appreciate the time you took to try to explain this, and while I know it's not what you intended, I ended up more confused about pneumatic props than before I watched your video. I had no idea there was so many parts to making a simple prop with this method. While the surprise or scare effect is not as good, I think I will be sticking to motorized props.
There are also voltage regulators that will reduce the voltage on a motor. A keyword to look for is "buck". Basically they do PWM inside and then smooth the voltage to send to the motor. You can get them that will go down to as low as 1.5V.
Also: Many years back a friend of mine made a quite nice prop(s). Many people have seen "light organs" or "color organs" where the light comes on in reaction to a sound. He had two jack-o-lanterns. One was over here and the other over there. (you get the idea about 8 feet apart). He had a set of PC speakers with one speaker behind each. He then had two people record a conversation to produce a stereo recording with each person's voice in its own channel only. A nice thing about the way he did it, the actors could also hide and run it directly with microphones. This meant they could run the canned stuff most of the time and take over while thinking about which canned audio to use next.
Good video Steve. RIP but we will pick up the torch once again **Halloween2go** (that's me my friend).. You tube was not even a 'thing' when I was doing my videos.. We at least had some fun and it was a great creative outlet.. Dave
Amazing 😮
I want to raise a coffin with a person in it. I'm with the Lions club in Mustang Oklahoma and we put on a haunted house for a fund raiser. This allows us to donate back to our community.
How am I just finding out about this? Awesome idea/product, have always thought about making my own animations but the motion/effects execution part of the equation made it seem daunting. After seeing this video I'm ordering a set today and ill just have to send Spirit Halloween an apology for all the money I won't be spending on their aniatronics going forward.. lol
So awesome how you share the linkages and designs. Your work will live on in our haunts, meaning you will haunt the world!
I cannot get this device to record on ANY of the available tracks. After trying to set up the record feature, as instructed, the transmitter no longer works with the receiver. Please offer advise ASAP. I have a STEM camp demo in a few days.
I bought your book!
Wow, Fantasic
This is an ad
Is there a blue print site to build these?
Try a icecream maker motor there slow and very powerful too.
“They are the devils play tool!” Oh you mean the game made by Hasbro?
what would you say the overall cost of this was? I'd love to make something like this but I'm not made of money. Regardless, this is insane, levels above 99% of professional dark ride animatronics !
Are those wiper motors water/weather proof? If not, is it possible to weather proof them?
Anyone have Steve's controller and remote from addicore? I'm not sure what power supply if I use that with pneumatic cylinders
my mom has a senegal parrot so i want to make him a little friend, this is a more complex version than the janky one i was building, works so well!
